A Call for Action: East High Students Peacefully Protest

On February 16th there was a peaceful student led protest outside of the front doors of East High. Students gathered in front of the school to show their support. The leaders of this walk out were Vasey Pain, Brandon Lewis, and Lucy. They said that they were shocked how there hasn’t been a walk out sooner. “Free Palestine” was shouted loud and proud. Other chants started to form such as “cease fire” and “let the Palestinian people live.” Brandon Lewis says, “There is a genocide going on and I am shocked that no one has chosen to speak up about it yet. Obviously, this has been going on for 30+ years, but in the last couple of months we have seen an escalation since October. Vasey Pain says, “It has been non- stop death of the Palestinian people and it is shocking to me that people can see the news, videos, images, and horrors that we see coming out of Palestine, and not want to act on it.” As high schoolers it is up to us to use the platforms we have and act on it.

About the Contributor
Katherine Jolley
Katherine Jolley is a freshman at East High and just turned fifteen. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and has lived here ever since. Katherine loves traveling, hanging out with friends, watching movies, camping, and hiking. Utah is the perfect place for her as she enjoys being outdoors and would choose being outside instead of inside any day of the week. Katherine chose to be in journalism because she wants people to enjoy and understand what she writes. Katherine enjoys many sports including cross country and volleyball. As a freshman, she runs on the varsity team for cross country. She loves being active, but also when needed she loves to get a bunch of her favorite snacks, cuddle up in a blanket and watch a movie.Katherine has one older sister, Eleanor, who is a senior at East High, and is one of the editors in the journalism class. Even though Eleanor and Katherine fight a lot, they are super close and are best friends. Family often calls Katherine, “Katy,” and she is very close with all of them. She loves clothes and definitely has the best style in her family. (Sorry Ella). But Katherine really does love putting outfits together and creating different looks. In the future, she would love to attend college and some day live in New York. She dreams of being successful and happy in whatever path she chooses, but hopefully ending up in a big city because she finds city life more interesting. Katherine is very lucky that she has been able to travel a lot because of her dad’s job. She’s been all over the country and even got to go to India for 2 weeks. India was an incredible experience and taught her a lot about their fascinating culture. She loves making new friends wherever she travels. Katherine has always felt a strong connection to animals, and she currently has two dogs and two cats. Her parents are divorced, and she has moved homes a total of 10 times all over Salt Lake City, so she knows her way around!
