Abortion in Utah

Abortion+in+Utah

The Roe v Wade ruling protects abortion rights for Americans, but currently has many Americans worried, and for a good reason too. This is because it’s in danger of being overturned by the Supreme Court.

But, this isn’t the first time something like this has happened.

In Texas, the S.B. 8 law was passed back in September, and it banned all abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, which means, due to the fact that majority of abortions done in Texas are after six weeks of being pregnant, it will dissipate abortions rates to nearly nothing.

Many other states are ready to implement the same laws.

They do this in the form of trigger laws. Trigger laws are laws not yet passed, but set up so that if something else changes, usually another law getting passed or overturned, it will be put in place immediately.

These trigger laws are set up in roughly 12 states around the country, Utah being one of them.

If Roe v Wade is overturned Utah’s trigger law will shut down most abortion clinics in the state and make it virtually impossible to get safe abortion care here. This is why so many people and groups have been protesting against it.

One such group is the Satanic Temple.

The Satanic Temple is a nontheistic religion, mainly centered around the well-being of people and their bodies, and respecting everything and everyone. They believe that abortion is a right everyone should have access too and that religion and state should be separated (in response to the LDS Church having influence over how Utah is run). Due to all of this, they have been very vocal with their animosity towards the Texas abortion ban and the Roe v Wade case, and back in September, right after the Texas abortion ban was implimented, a group of worshippers went to protest for reproductive rights at the capitol.

But, they weren’t the only ones there that day.

A group of pro-life protesters also showed up and intterupted a few of the speeches that were being given by the members of the Satanic Temple. Many of them were opposed to the original protest, and expressed their concern for the unborn babies that abortions kill, saying that “It makes me sad. Because I believe that life begins at conception”.

Overall, this is a people’s issue and we should have a say in our own rights.

If Roe v Wade is overturned it will harm many people, specifically people whose circumstances can’t support a baby, and, in my opinion, it’s an unnecessary restriction for people to have. It doesn’t affect anyone other than the person getting an abortion, but people still seem to think that it is their business. Even if you pose the argument that they are killing a life, isn’t the parent’s life more important than an unborn baby’s? Abortions are a personal decision that nobody but the person getting one should decide.

This whole conversation is a step back from the progress we made years ago and paves the way for other bills protecting human rights to be overturned. If this is truly the land of the free, then why can my rights be taken away this easily. I, as a woman capable of giving birth, should not be worried that if I get pregnant I will have to raise a human being, a huge commitment that many people plan for months or even years in advance, and not be able to do anything about it. Sure, adoption is an option, but it is a messed up system that most kids only get out of because they turn 18. Children should be loved and given a good life, and many people have circumstances that can’t provide that, so they get abortions, which ends up being the best option for them. Even if you can support a child, it doesn’t matter because it again comes down to the person carrying the child to decide if they want an abortion or not. It is a decision for the people to make and nobody else, and Roe v Wade getting overturned will take away that decision and that right.
